A commercial website exists to generate business. Like any business, transactions happen between the company and customers. Without customers, there are no sales, no profits, and eventually, no business left. The key to success for any web business,, then, is the same as the key for any ordinary retailer: attracting customers.
In order for customers to show up at your store, whether it is on line or not, they need to know that it exists. A brick and mortar store can be discovered in many ways, not the least of which is that people just happen to drive by and see it. On the internet, however, no one is going to drive by and just happen to notice your website.
That means that you’ll need to reach out to customers to tell them about your products. In order to do that, you need to know where they are. For online retailers, that means using Search Engine Optimization (SEO). In July of 2009, more than 13 billion searches were performed on the major internet search engines. Sites line Google, Bing, Yahoo, and the others are overwhelmingly the place that customers go when they are looking for something on the internet. Out of all the available search engines, they choose Google more than 70% of the time. The remaining 30% is split between all the other search engines, including foreign sites like China’s Baidu that are probably not going to bring you any customers at all. By concentrating your efforts on the site that offers the biggest bang for the buck, Google, you’ll not only put your site in front of the largest group of potential customers, but you’ll also find that much of what works for Google will also increase your visibility at the other search engines as well.
When a potential customer searches for a product or service on a search engine, the search engine returns thousands, and sometimes millions of websites relating to the topic for which they searched. Your site is probably already in that list somewhere. However, the search engines break that list into bite-sized pieces of 10 websites at a time. In other words, the user only sees the top ten websites related to their search. If the user doesn’t find anything that looks interesting on that first page of results, they might click through to see the next ten results. With every page deeper in the results, the number of users who ever see those results falls off dramatically.
If you want potential customers to know about your website and to visit it, then you need high placement within the search engine results for the key words that describe your products or services. Search Engine Optimaization (SEO) Marketing is the best way to achieve that goal and is where the lion’s share of your marketing efforts should be directed. SEO marketing is the practice of making sure your website has all the attributes necessary to show the search engines that it is highly relevant to users searching for the topics related to your business. In other words, before you convince customers that you have what they want, you first have to convince the search engines that you have what their users want.
