In developed countries around the world children are spending increasing amounts of their classroom time in front of a computer. Teachers have had to learn how to teach with new methods often involving computer use. Schools realize that to turn out graduates able to compete in the modern job market, the students must learn computer skills. Even in underdeveloped countries, the importance of computers and online instruction is recognized.
Interestingly, online bingo operators have come to realize that they have a powerful learning tool in online bingo. Some of the site operators have chosen to accept the social responsibility and now routinely include educational games in addition to their “for profit” games. Many bingo websites now offer bingo games created specifically for educational purposes. These sites don’t merely target children that can already read, they target children as young as toddlers.
There are some wonderful bingo games online that cater to children too young to read. The games use very attractive, colorful screens and a lot of activity to keep the child’s attention. In one game, the child is shown a grid with an animal in each square. The grid resembles a bingo card with animals instead of numbers. Instead of the bingo caller shouting out a number, the child hears a noise an animal would make. The purpose of the game is for the child to match the sound with the animal’s picture. The child points and clicks on the animal instead of daubing a number on a card. It is a game of recognition and memory designed to teach the child about animals while improving their memory skills. The child only sees the game as fun, where the teacher or parent see it as an instructional tool.
For school age children there are many fun bingo games that can be played while learning. Most of us remember using flash cards when we were practicing our math skills. Online bingo can be a tremendous learning tool for drilling and learning math. One particular game is the perfect game for a child who is struggling with math. When the player clicked on the “start game” button, a selection box was displayed allowing the child or their supervisor to choose what level math bingo they wished to play. I tried all the levels and each level was more difficult than the one before it. After making that selection a grid screen was displayed. The grid had numbers in about half of the boxes. The “caller” in this case was a box near the screen that contained a math problem. For instance, the “caller” box contained the math problem 4/2=?. The goal of the game is for the player to find the correct answer and click on it. In addition, there is an animal (the type varies) running across the top of the grid from one side to the other. The player must get all the answers correct in that set of problems by the time the animal reaches the other side. I had fun with this bingo game and can see how kids would love it. Most likely, they would not realize they were being schooled. Online bingo operators have a powerful educational tool and some sites are making sure to use that tool wisely.
