When you have shots of from 25 to 75 yards or so to a green, you begin to swing the club just as you do when hitting the driver from the tee. The essential techniques are the same. The differences are only in degree. For example, the shoulders and hips turn in each instance, but in relation to the length of the swing. The longer the swing, the more you will turn. And the very length of the swing is very much determined by the club you’re using. You shouldn’t be making a full driver swing with a wedge. The stance should be slightly open, the left foot drawn back and aimed somewhat left of target line.
That sounds as if the golf clubs are some kind of computerized machines that do their thing while you just hang on and enjoy the results. They are nothing of the kind, as you well know. What I’m saying is, your good sense of golf is assisted, even set in motion, by the characteristics of the equipment you happen to be using. It’s that way in so many things we do. If the brake pedal on your car is high and tight, you know you don’t have to jam down hard on it to stop where and when you want to. But you do use the same foot movement you would if the brakes were low and soft. The same principle applies in playing a pitch shot in golf, or any other shot for that matter.
Setting Up
The mechanics of playing the pitch shot follow your normal pattern. The ball-to-foot alignment at address is well left of center, about three inches inside the left heel. The hands should be just a touch behind the ball.
For the pitch there is quite a narrow separation of the feet and the stance is opened up-the left foot drawn back from the target line a couple of inches. Since you won’t be using much body turn for this short shot, you want your left side “cleared” right from the start, and the open stance allows a free flow of the club through the shot.
