Traveling, whether for business or pleasure, can be an exciting change of pace and a great way to see different parts of the country or the world. But some parts of traveling can be a pain in the neck- literally.
One of the most common complaints about traveling is about the hotel and more specifically about the bed. Everyone has different preferences and needs when it comes to a mattress. Some people sleep better on a firm mattress while others prefer a softer mattress. A change to a different mattress in a hotel room can cause discomfort and lack of sleep- two things that do not bode well for those still on the road. Those traveling for business need to be alert during the day to be effective. While those traveling on vacation want to be awake and relaxed in order to enjoy their trip. An uncomfortable mattress can cause shoulder and neck pain as well as constant tossing and turning as the sleeper tries to find a comfortable position. The resulting reduction in deep sleep can make travelers exhausted and sore the next day.
The majority of hotels in America still provide old-fashioned spring or coil mattresses. These mattresses use cylinders of wound wire springs to provide resistance against the body. What can make spring and coil mattresses uncomfortable is that they provide the same amount of resistance against the portions of the body laying on them but provide no support to the inner curves of the body such as waists and necks. This resistance against the pressure points of the body can cause muscle strain.
A recent entrant into the field of mattresses is the memory foam mattress. Memory foam was originally invented by NASA as a material that would cushion the astronaut’s bodies against the incredible forces during liftoff. Memory foam is a high density viscous material that responds to the amount of pressure exerted against it and “remembers” or holds the shape of the object. What this means for sleepers is that the parts of the body that exert more pressure like hips and shoulders sink deeper into the material and the rest of the body is supported and cushioned. The experience of the mattress is different for every person as the mattress conforms to the needs of the body rather than the body having to conform to the shape of the mattress.
Replacing coil and spring mattresses in hotel rooms with memory foam mattresses would improve the quality of sleep in hotels immensely. From a price perspective, a quality memory foam mattress has come down in price substantially in the past few years and is on par with a similar quality traditional mattress. A memory foam mattress, however, is likely to last longer as there are no metal parts to fatigue.
Every traveler’s sleep needs are different but a memory foam mattress perfectly adapts to every need and can provide a long and comfortable sleep for road-weary travelers.
