Many women believe that you can never have too many shoes. With the wide variety of shoes available to women, it is easy to see how this can be true. Most of the popular styles of women’s shoes have special types of heels that differentiate the styles from each other. Here are the most common types of women’s heels explained.
A flat heel is fairly self-explanatory. A shoe with a flat heel may appear to be a shoe with no heel at all. Flat heels are commonly referred to simply as “flats” and are usually simple slip-on casual shoes.
A Kitten heel is a short heel less than two inches with a slight curve that is set in from the back of the shoe. Kitten heels are very common on sandals. They are a popular heel choice for adolescent females given the shorter heel.
The Stiletto heel probably has the reputation of the sexiest of the bunch. Stiletto heels are tall and thin. They are also referred to as spiked heels. Typically a Stiletto heel is over two and a half inches, and is less than half an inch in diameter where the heel meets the ground. Stiletto heels rose to popularity in the 1950’s, and were reintroduced into mainstream fashion in the late 1970’s by Manolo Blahnik.
The Cone heel is an inverted cone shape that is wider were it meets the shoe and narrow where it touches the ground. Cone heels are sturdy and easy to walk in, making them a popular choice among women. Cone heels may also be considered chunky heels.
Chunky heels are the opposite of a stiletto heel. They are any heel that has more weight to it and is not thin nor spiked. Chunky heels are popular on boots and sandals and are tend to make a shoe feel more casual than a stiletto or kitten heel.
Wedge heels could be divided into multiple categories. Wedge heels can vary from how to high. The distinguishing factor that makes a wedge heel is that the heel runs from the heel of the shoe all the way in to the middle or front forming the tale tell triangular, or wedge, shape.
Stacked heels are heels that are designed to give the illusion that small pieces of wood have been stacked on top of each other to build the heel. Stacked heels can come in any variety of shapes including kitten heel, stiletto, cone, or chunky heels. They are usually brown and are a different color and texture than the rest of the shoe.
Platforms can be added to any type of heel to make the shoe taller and still retain the ability to be walked in. Platform shoes are categorized by having a thick sole sitting under the front part of the shoe adding extra height and allowing for a taller heel.
With the selection of women’s heels so varied, there is surely a shoe for all occasions. It does not matter if you wear the highest of stilettos or the flattest ballerina flat, it can almost go without saying that with the variety of women’s heels available, it really is almost impossible to have too many pairs of shoes at your disposal
