Blisters and Walking Boots

Hiking boots

Even good walking boots can chafe your feet so when you’re looking to buy new walking boots you need to remember break your walking boots in at home before taking them out onto the hills. When your hiking boots fit you well, your feet will carry you for mile after mile, but if they rub or pinch then the distance you’ll travel will be significantly reduced. Blisters are agony. Remember to go prepared when you take your new walking boots out on their first few hikes.

If you feel heat in a concentrated area that’s the first sign that your new walking boots are rubbing. Stop walking as soon as you can, cover the affected area with a blister dressing to prevent further friction. If your walking boots do give you a blister then treatment is critical. Small blisters should be left alone and protected as already mentioned but if you are only halfway through your walk, large blisters should be pricked with a sterile needle, drained of fluid and then cleaned. A dressing such as moleskin or second skin should be applied before you put your walking boots back on and resume your journey.

Once your walking boots are properly broken in you shouldn’t suffer too many problems but as with anything prevention is the best tactic, so keep your feet dry during your walk by applying talcum powder before you set off, and always wear clean dry walking socks.
