Tramadol (brand name Ultram) is a centrally acting, narcotic like analgesic used for the relief of moderate to severe chronic pain. It belongs to the family of drugs called opiate agonists that change the mechanism by which the body senses pain. There are two tablet forms of this medication; regular Tramadol is taken every 4-6 hours as needed. Tramadol ER (extended release) is taken once a day. It may be taken with or without food.
Tramadol is a synthetic drug that was developed in the late 1970’s by Grünenthal GmbH, a German pharmaceutical company. It was originally marketed as “Tramal.”
Tramadol is not a medication to be taken lightly (no pun intended). As with most narcotic type drugs, an addiction can result from using Tramadol. Only use this medication as directed; do not take a larger dose than instructed, do not take it more frequently or for a longer period than your doctor prescribes. The ER form must be swallowed whole: do not crush, split or chew them. Inhaling powder of crushed tablets or injecting dissolved ER tablets can cause very serious side effects and even prove fatal.

Although inadvertently often classified as an opiate due to its agonist activity, Tramadol/Ultram is not chemically related to the opiate family of medications.
